Heino Gehrts (1913-1998) was a German researcher of fairy tales, myths, and legends, working primarily as a private scholar. His work comprises more than 70 publications (1954–1998) and often ventures beyond academic boundaries. Uwe Schellinger and Sven Gallinat called him a scientific border-crosser. Gehrts combines meticulous source work with an orientation towards illuminating meaning (Sinnerhellung). Bringing ritual objects and anomalous phenomena (such as possessions, hauntings, and ghostly apparitions) into systematic, meaning-centred study – thereby crossing the boundaries between humanities, cultural anthropology, and the empirical sciences. He explores the meaning embedded in mythical and ritual expressions, as well as in devices that serve purposes beyond their practical use. Things and actions, for him, are primarily ceremonial objects and carriers of meaning (Sinnträger), not technical means.
